  Frequently Asked Questions

What airlines fly to Liberia and what is the distance from Liberia airport to Villa Vista Azul?

From the U.S. Delta now flies direct from Atlanta and American flies direct from Miami on a daily basis.  There are also flights from Houston on Continental.  Once a week Continental also has a direct flight from Newark, New Jersey, and U.S. Air has a flight once a week from Raleigh, North Carolina.  If you are already in Costa Rica, there are flights on Sansa and Nature Air from several locations in Costa Rica to Liberia airport. Daniel Ouduber International airport is located 22 kilometers from the villa and the driving time is about 30 minutes.

What airlines fly to San Jose and what is the distance from San Jose airport to Villa Vista Azul?

All of the airlines listed above fly to San Jose as well as Grupo Taca and Spirit Airlines. San Jose is located about 160 miles from the villa.  The driving time is around 4.5 hour depending on traffic.

There are a number of rental car companies at the airport which is located on the road to Guanacaste or you may elect to take a taxi or transport service to get to Guanacaste.

Can you assist with airport transfers?

We have contacts with several land tour and transportation companies, and will assist you in arranging for airport transfers or transportation to other destinations of your choice.

What is the closest town and what is there to do there?

Playas del Coco is the nearest town where you will find the bank, Luperon, our local super market, drug stores and a variety of shops and restaurants. Playas del Coco still has it’s fishing town flavor although there are now more and more amenities for tourists to be found here.

Do you offer tours?

Our sister company, Almaco Tours, offers all types of water activities both above and below the sea. We also coordinate land tours with other operators and can handle all of your tour needs.

What type of electricity do you have in the villa?

The villa, like the U.S., has 110 voltage.

What is the currency and do I need to change money before I get there?

The currency of Costa Rica is the colon. There is no need to change money in advance as dollars are readily accepted, although you will generally receive colones as change that can always be used for those last minute airport purchases.

Is there an exit tax?

When you exit Costa Rica you will be required to pay an exit tax at the airport of $26.00 per person. This may be paid in colones, dollars or with a Visa card only.

If renting a car, what kind of vehicle is recommended?

Villa Vista Azul is built on the side of a steep hill, and therefore, the driveway up to the garage is a steep incline as well. As such, you will need a higher vehicle such as a 4-wheel drive to get up the driveway into the garage. A regular sedan-type vehicle is too low to the ground and must be parked at street level.

If renting a car, is it better to rent from the U.S.? We have found that rental car prices tend to be more competitive if booked in advance from the U.S. The major U.S. companies (Avis, Alamo, National, Thrifty, Payless) all have rental locations near the
airport. You will be required to take the minimal insurance for your rental.

What is the ocean temperature and visibility?

Surface conditions are fairly stable year round, however, water temperatures can range from 74 - 78 degrees F from January to March, and 78 to 84F from April to December. Keep in mind that while surface temperatures are fairly constant, there are colder thermoclines present during January through March. Visibility ranges from 20 - 80 feet.

What type of wetsuit do you recommend?

We generally recommend 3-5mm depending on the time of year.

Do U.S. cell phones work in Costa Rica and at the villa?

Depending on your U.S. provider, your cell phone may work when you arrive in Costa Rica but probably will not make local calls. Given the location of Playa Ocotal, the cell phone signal is blocked so that there is no cell phone reception at all at the villa. You should buy an international calling card to use the land line at the villa, as it is restricted to local calls.

Do I need to go to the grocery store before I come to the villa?

The villa is stocked with a basic welcome package that includes orange juice, coffee, tea, milk, bottled water, a selection of soda and a freshly baked banana bread and fruits. We also supply laundry detergent and other basic household supplies.
